Nature photography is a wide umbrella that includes landscape photography, wildlife photography, plants, bugs and outdoor subjects in general. But architecture, people, machines tend to be excluded from nature photography.

Nature photography is often the domain of the fine art photographer but is also used for scientific reference, travel photography and can be seen in some of the greatest magazines of all time, such as National Geographic and Audubon publications, illustrating the fascination with nature, either seen from very close up as in macro or microscopic photography or at a distance as in landscape or scenic photography. In the case of wildlife photography, nature photography investigates the life of animals, birds, fish, usually in their natural habitat and can expose us to aspects of the natural world that many of us would never otherwise witness.

A wide gamut of equipment is often needed in nature photography. For wildlife, a long telephoto lens is almost essential. For close-ups of the insect world, macro lenses which will give one-to-one magnification and show nature in its infinite detail. When you think of nature photography, you often think of staring into the eyes of a butterfly at close quarters or seeing the intricate details of the inside of a rose or orchid. This is macro photography. Special flash equipment is sometimes used (ring flash – where the electronic flash goes around the lens) to get even lighting at such close quarters. Lovers of nature photography tend to see details that others miss. The glint of sunlight on a frosty leaf, the patterns made by some plants when you get in really close, and so on. Successful nature photography includes the use of the right equipment which can include the whole range of lenses from extreme telephoto, through wide angle
to macro lenses, a sturdy but lightweight tripod, electronic flash, remote controls and so on.

A sense of lighting, color and composition are all essential to quality results in nature photography. Compare two photos of an eagle taken by different photographers, one an advanced amateur or pro and the other a beginner, and you see right away that beautiful or striking nature photography is not just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, although that is a factor. Patience, particularly in wildlife photographers, can make the difference
between success and failure in nature photography.

So what if all you have is a good point-and-shoot camera – is nature photography out of the question for you? Not at all. Most decent point-and-shoot cameras have macro settings and zoom lenses that give you a fair range from  wideangle to telephoto which can be extended with adapters added to the camera. If you love nature and have an eye, you can get some spectacular shots without recourse to more advanced equipment.

The main skill is in seeing and appreciating what is there and then capturing it as you see it sothat you can share with others.

Nikon wasn’t the company’s name until 1988.

Prior to this, the company was officially called Nippon Kogaku K.K. – many people believe the name changed earlier, but it wasn’t until the late 80’s. 1st April 1988, to be precise, Nikon Corporation was officially (re)born.

Of course, they had been using Nikon as a trademarked brand for many years (history suggests the name Nikon was first invented in the mid 1940’s), so why did they eventually decide to switch? Well, this little story direct from Nikon’s website may shed some light.
Then-president Shigetada Fukuoka met with former French President Jacques Chirac. On hearing the name Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, Mr Chirac simply tilted his head in bewilderment. When Mr. Fukuoka said the word “Nikon,” however, the Parisian mayor understood immediately.
President Fukuoka said “From hereon, I don’t want us to be limited by the name Kogaku (“optics”). Let us work toward even greater advancements.”

Nikon didn’t manufacture their first camera until 1948.

Thirty-one years after the company was founded by the merging of three separate optical manufacturers in 1917, Nikon launched their first camera, the Nikon I. Prior to this, Nikon made lenses under the Nikkor brand, along with binoculars and microscopes.

Demand for the camera in Japan was huge, but it wasn’t without it’s problems. A rush to manufacture left the camera somewhat unreliable, with the film advance often failing to work, which led to many customer complaints and forced Nikon into financial difficulties. However, they rebounded with 1949’s Nikon M and 1950’s Nikon S, then the S2, SP and finally the classic Nikon F SLR, quality and reliability improving with each model.

Nikon originally made all of their now arch-rival Canon’s lenses.

Canon’s first cameras were inexpensive Japanese Leica clones, and in 1934 it announced a 35mm rangefinder called the Kwanon. The Kwanon was just a prototype never put into production – it was followed by their first commercial camera, the Hansa Canon, in 1936. Canon had one problem, however – they didn’t have any experience of making lenses, so they contracted Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, already a proven optical designer and manfufacturer, and used Nikkor lenses. The Hansa Canon actually shipped as standard with a Nikkor 50mm f/3.5 lens.

In fact, a large part of the first Canon camera was made by Nikon – Nippon Kogaku was responsible for the lens, the lens mount, the viewfinder, and the complete rangefinder mechanism. Canon did start developing lenses in 1937, but they weren’t available until after WWII, and they didn’t launch their fast 50mm Serenar f/2 until 1947.

When launched in 1959, the Nikon F cost an average of three months salary.

We may think that we have it bad with the price of today’s digital SLRs, but the first Nikon SLR cost 67,000 Yen – three times the salary of a Japanese government employee at the time. They still managed to sell a million of them over the next 15 years!

This was the camera that introduced us to the F mount – the very same mount (albeit with added features, especially in the electronic age) that is still in use today. This mount was revolutionary at the time, having a huge diameter in comparison to it’s rangefinder peers, which allowed Nikkor F lenses to be far more resistant to mechanical vignetting.

Nikon’s first Digital SLR, the D1, was developed from scratch in just two years.

We may take for granted now that a new camera will be digital, but just over 10 years ago this was certainly not the case. Although the first Coolpix (the Coolpix 100) was produced in 1997, Nikon’s classic D1 wasn’t introduced until 1999.

The order to produce a DSLR came from Nikon’s president in 1997, and engineers responded by saying it would take four years, three at a minimum. They were given two.

The result was a 2.7mp DSLR with many features bettered by even today’s entry-level cameras (and also by it’s contemporary digicams; the Coolpix 100 was 3mp), but at the time it was revolutionary. The D1 quickly displaced Kodak from dominance of the DSLR market, and sales exceeded the target of 100,000 bodies per year even at it’s US$5500 asking price. With the D1, Nikon’s market share eclipsed that of Canon. Strangely, the camera used the NTSC colorspace, not the SRGB or AdobeRGB we use today.

William Henry Harrison autographs while serving as President of the United States are the scarcest of all presidential autographs.  Harrison served as U.S. President for only 32 days before dying of complications from a cold.  During his presidential tenure Harrison made enduring records for having given the longest inaugural address in American history.  His speech lasted almost two hours.  Harrison was also the first sitting president to have his photograph taken while in office. 

Harrison’s autograph is often encountered on office documents since he had a long and distinguished career in politics and the military.  Harrison gained stature as a national military hero when he defeated American Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe in Ohio.  As a result, Harrison gained the nickname “Tippecanoe”.  However, autographs of Harrison that include the name “Tippecanoe” have not been identified. 

Harrison’s autograph is most common during the period he served as governor of the Indiana territory, congressional representative from Ohio, or as U.S. Senator from Ohio.  Harrison’s autograph is typically signed “Willm Henry Harrison”.  An autograph dealer recently offered a manuscript check completely written in the hand of Governor Harrison from 1811 for $7,500.

Many collectors seek his autograph because of the profound effect Harrison had on the development of the Midwest in America.  As territorial Governor of Indiana and Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Harrison provided annuities ranging from $200 to $500 for individual tribes in exchange for obtaining three million acres in the Midwest.  Harrison’s actions led the way for development in the Midwest. 

Harrison capitalized on the weak U.S. economy caused by the Panic of 1837 and his military record to win the American presidential election in 1840 as candidate from the Whig party.  Until Ronald Reagan took office, Harrison was the oldest American to become president of the United States.  Only three weeks later, Harrison developed a cold that progressed in pneumonia.  Harrison’s death only 32 days after inauguration made his tenure the shortest of any American president. 

Because of his short tenure, autographs from Harrison as president are exceptionally scarce.  Only twenty-four Harrison presidential documents, three letters signed as president, and two presidential manuscript letters are known to exist.  One of his manuscript letters was sold in April 2007 for $167,300.  Of Harrison’s presidential documents, twelve are in private hands and twelve are in institutions.  In 2010, a partially trimmed ship’s paper from the port of Newport, Rhode Island, was offered for sale at a West Coast auction.  Although it was dated August 28, 1841, Harrison as President signed it since it was customary at the time for Presidents and their cabinet members to sign documents like this in advance of their use.  The item sold for thousands of dollars. 

William Henry Harrison autographs have wide appeal because of Harrison’s special place in American history.  Harrison’s autograph will continue to be a valuable pillar for collectors of presidential autographs.
