Learn Digital Photography – Top Ten Tips For Fantastic Photos
The title of this article may sound simplistic and if you put these few tips into practise you’ll be taking fantastic photos in no time. In a sense this is true. But, the factor of time and the diligence you put into it is what will determine the success of your efforts. If you take the time the tips will make the difference in your photography journey.
So here are the tips. The question is, how do you incorporate them into your photography? The most important factor is structure. Don’t try to do it all at once. Learn to master each step and implement it gradually into your photography. The key is mastering it. Don’t move on to the next one until you are competent with the previous.
Here are the steps, look at them carefully and start learning.
1. Look your subject in the eye
This means getting down to the level of the subject if necessary and getting your camera level with the subject’s eyes.
This is especially so if you are photographing a child. The whole dynamic of the photo changes as this makes it more personal and draws the eye in to the photo.
2. Get in closer
Your goal is to fill your image with as much of the subject as possible. Use your feet before you zoom and exclude any unnecessary clutter. Don’t get in too close as this will result in blurred images.
3. Use a plain background
This will lift your subject off the background. When looking through the viewfinder take note of what is in the background before focusing on the subject. No chimneys growing out of heads or bushes growing out of ears.
4. Move the subject from the centre
The centre of an image is not the best place for your subject. Imagine a grid across your image dividing it into thirds. Two lines horizontally and two vertically. Where the lines intersect is where you place your subject. This will bring your photo to life.
5. Be aware of the light
After the subject the most important aspect of a photo is the light. Know where it comes from and place your subject relative to it. Strong light from the side will bring out the texture of an old building. Soft light on a cloudy day will soften the wrinkles of an old person. Shooting landscapes early or late in the day will give a golden light.
6. Turn your camera
We all tend to take photos holding the camera level in a horizontal format. That’s the way cameras are made. Change the format. Take photos using the vertical format. Many subjects look better in this format. Lighthouses, the Eiffel tower or a portrait of a child all look better shot vertically.
7. Direct your images
Take charge of people in your images. Tell them clearly where to stand and what to do. Choose the location and the setting. Get them to face the direction you want or closer or further away from the camera.
8. Use your flash outdoors
Natural light can cause harsh shadows to fall across faces. You can eliminate these shadows by lightening the face with flash. We call this fill in flash. You’ll find a setting on your camera for this. If you are further than 5 feet use the flash on full power. On cloudy days fill in flash will brighten shadows.
9. Put the sun behind you
The best place to shoot from is when the sun is behind you and slightly to the side. The full frontal lighting will bring out the colour and lighting from the slight side angle will produce a little shadow and bring out the texture and form.
10. Hold steady
Many photographers have the problem of blurry images because they don’t hold or support their cameras properly. Use both hands resting your elbows on your chest or holding them tightly to your side. Relax and don’t tense. Take a deep breath, exhale and press the shutter. Use a support like a wall or pole to steady yourself and if the situation allows use a tripod.
These are just a few tips that will immediately improve your images as you apply them one step at a time to your photography. Plan your time to shoot and structure your learning to get optimum growth in your photography journey.

High Wing Vs Low Wing Aerial Photography
I got a call from a potential Aerial Photographer seeking information about shooting from his Beech Sundowner. Lovely airplanes…I have many hours in a similar aircraft the Warrior. Economical to operate, inexpensive to acquire…in short, it’s a great all round aircraft but it does have a few drawbacks..
1. For Oblique Aerials (basically shot at an angle out the window) the big drawback is the wing blocks the vast part of the picture. You are left shooting toward the front or the rear of the wing and you will largely need to decide that for reasons that will become clear in number 2.
2. The windows do not open in these airplanes so you will need to invest in one or more camera ports that will need to be cut out of your plexiglass. These are obviously done by a qualified individual and can be expensive. Typically you will select one for shooting in front of the wing or behind…or I suppose you could opt for both. No matter how you cut it (pun intended) this is not an optimum shooting environment and will set you back the cost of a nice lens.
3. Copilots for this aircraft would ideally be flying from the right seat unless the photographer is left handed. There are probably far few skilled in flying from the right in this aircraft than would be the case with Cessnas. Many insurance companies require the airplane to be flown from the left seat unless a qualified “right seater” is available.
If I had the option of flying for free in a buddies low wing plane…for FREE, I would be hard pressed to accept since I have tried this feat from low wing A/C before and it is very very difficult.
In the high wing Cessna, the window can easily be prepared to open all the way such that it rests on the underside of the wing and is held there by the prop wash at all but the slowest speeds. There is no need to bungee the window open or use any special measures. All that is required is one small Phillips screw be removed from the retaining clip on the left side window and it is set. Even with the strut on most Cessnas, the field of vision is huge by comparison.
In this gentleman’s case, he owns the Sundowner and his costs would be dramatically lower than renting the FBO’s Cessna. It’s a tough call to make but one that most Aerial Photographers seem to make in favor of the high wing A/C.

Digital Photography – How To Do It Like The Professionals
The great thing about digital photography is that you have a wide room for creativity once you are in photo shop and have your image on your computer. You can create any kind of effect by playing around with your shots in any way you choose. So for in – camera techniques for that cutting edge creative and artistic shot, what is the picture like? Let us look at some of the techniques you can play with to get the best professional and artistic shots. It’s fun and your only limit is how far your imagination can go.
Zoom As You Shoot: One way to put a sense of movement in your image is to zoom your lens in or out while taking a shot, keeping your camera still as you do so. While panning puts a vertical motion into the picture, zooming gives a dynamic 3D effect. When you combine zooming with slow sync flash, you get pretty dramatic results. Try it and see for yourself.
Move Your Camera: You may have been taught that to get very sharp images, you need to keep your camera still while shooting. I am not about to dispute that. But then, sometimes you want a different result than sharp. You can add motion to your shot by moving the camera while shooting. To achieve this effect, you can pan, rotate, or throw your camera.
Put Your Camera On The Ground: Catching your object from this low angle gives a totally new dimension to your shots. You get to see your images from a new perspective. You equally capture an interesting foreground and maybe even one or two surprising objects along the way.
Experiment With Different Exposure Levels: Adjusting your shutter speed to the maximum can earn you bright burnt out images. Use this technique if you are shooting colorful objects because it can give you the images on bright, burnt out background.
Use Low Sync Flash: This technique is your best bet if you are shooting in low light conditions with ambient light and an object you want to light up with a flash.
Shoot From A High Pedestal: Here you attach your camera to a tripod or an extended mono pod and a long shutter release cable. You are able to catch objects high up (bill boards for example) and equally shoot down on scenes you could otherwise not be able to see before. Fish eye and wide – angle lenses make the fun better.
Multiple Exposures: Not many digital cameras have the ability to do multiple exposures, but if your own does, you can achieve some extraordinary results. Take photographs of the same scene from slightly different angles and focal lengths. This is particularly effective with shots with a recurring pattern. You can achieve the same effect in photo shop if your camera does not have the multiple exposure feature.
White Balance: You can put a variety of color casts into your images by playing with different white balance settings. White balance settings are designed to compensate for different types of light situations. You can warm up or cool down the image by experimenting with these images.
Understand Bulb Setting: By holding down the shutter release button, you can keep your shutter open for as long as you want. This allows you a lot of room to play around, especially in low light conditions. The bulb is quite useful when you want to capture light trails like fireworks on new year’s eve.

As the days and weeks go by, I began to be familiar with the digital camera and suddenly digital photography became a passion for me. I wanted to take more than just ordinary pictures! I dug through my old closet and found the manual to this digital camera and started reading it. I learned about quality, that a 300 dpi will produce a better quality than a 72 dpi resolution. If only I have learned this much earlier! I learned about shutter speeds and exposure, white balance and how to remove red eye effects… digital photography is becoming very interesting!
Do you have problem taking pictures through a window? every time I take a picture to a window, there is always a reflection on the picture. Sometimes the reflection is so small I can only is it after I transfer it onto my computer. If only I knew to stand closer to the window, I would have reduced the reflection that reflects on shiny surface of the glass.
Have you tried to take pictures in the dark? if you try to use the flash with the camera, the picture could look too bright. Especially if you use it in a jungle, you will scare away most of the animals. There is a way to use the camera to take pictures without flash in the dark. That is to increase your light exposure. You can control your shutter speed by decreasing it. By decreasing the shutter speed, you allow more light to go your camera and brighten up the dark picture.
In addition to the light present, the amount of light that is reflected from the image is then absorbed into the shutter. The longer the shutter close its lead, the high exposure and brighter the image. Have you wonder how cats can see very well in the night? Their eyes are so sensitive to light, a candle in the dark can lid up a whole room for them. It takes some practice for you and I to learn about the shutter speed. Experiment and testing is crucial to know what is the correct speed.
As digital camera is getting cheaper and cheaper these days, digital photography is being picked up by many amateur Digital photographers. The younger generation to be able to pick up on softwares in many leading pictures past digital photography is a growing hobby.

Can You Fake Your Own Product Photography Studio In House?
Do you really need a product photography studio, or can you get away with photographing your products in house? If you look at the average sort of price charged by a commercial advertising photographer you’ll almost certainly be tempted to consider avoiding having to rely on a fully equipped product photography studio, instead using lower grade equipment, and hoping that a few key techniques will get you by.
It’s understandable since at the moment almost all small and medium sized businesses are looking to make cuts wherever possible. Sadly many photographic studios seem unwilling to help smaller businesses keep up with the big businesses, pricing themselves out of the market in many cases. It should be noted though that this isn’t always the case, and if you’re prepared to look about there are a few photography studios offering lower priced deals for small and medium sized businesses.
But is even that expensive fully justified, if it really is possible instead to take your product photographs in house? Certainly it’s relatively easy these days to pick up a pretty decent digital camera in any high street store. With even mobile phones now able to take the same sort of quality image of a decent digital camera a few years ago, the quality of the image is likely to be very good if you’re prepared to spend over £300 at least. But you shouldn’t just be budgeting for the camera, because there are many other camera equipment items besides the camera itself which will be necessary.
Thinking small and simple to begin with, you’ll certainly need a tripod in order to make sure the camera is stable and lined up correctly. But if you hook a camera to a tripod, no matter how careful you are there is often a slight bit of movement once you press the shutter button. This is why it’s often a good idea to have a remote shutter button on a lead, so that you can trigger the camera without nudging it, even slightly.
Then of course there’s the lighting. Don’t think for one moment that the built in flash on even a good camera will be good enough. In fact you needn’t even consider the flash as usable on most digital cameras. You’ll need to look at an external flash or lighting system, and this will of course need to be hooked in to the remote trigger. Different products will require different lighting solutions. A fully equipped product photography studio will have a whole range of lighting solutions, including soft lighting, hard lighting, coloured lighting and even LED lighting.
But then again, lighting is not just about lights, because sometimes it will be necessary to diffuse the light, or even have it reflect in different ways for a clearer result. This is where reflector boards, panels and umbrellas will be helpful, creating the sort of diffused lighting which allows products to be seen clearly, as they would in optimum daylight, without lights creating or exacerbating shadows and contrast. Another issue you’ll find with taking product photographs in house is that you’ll be unable to remove the backgrounds very easily. You can tell at a glance when a product photograph has been taken in house, ‘on the cheap’, because you can see the background – often just a sheet hung over something.
A professional product photography studio will usually have what is called an infinity cove, which is a specially designed room or space which has no corners or edges, and therefore nothing to suggest that there is any background at all. Products can be photographed in front of this, and will stand out clearly, and can even be cut out from the backgrounds and superimposed on alternative backgrounds. This is just the starting point for creating decent photographic images, although there’s a great deal more besides these first few tips.
