Ok, so you’ve received a nice, shiny, new digital camera for Christmas or your birthday and you’ve been using a lot but every picture you take is far from what you envisioned in your head or it looks like the same thing everybody else is doing. Don’t worry! This is normal and can be fixed with a couple tips and tricks.

When I started taking pictures I had no choice but to use a film camera. There was no such thing as digital photography,(unless you worked for NASA.)I started out with a 35mm Minolta that was already 15 years old. The first 24 pictures I took came out grainy, underdeveloped, overdeveloped, out of focus, and some were blurred. Plus I had to shell out my hard earned money for the film and the finished prints. Talk about discouraging! What to do? The only answer was to grab a couple books and start learning and I encourage you to do the same.

Luckily for you digital photography is now in it’s prime and the camera manufacturers have made it very easy to get good pictures. In addition, you don’t have to spend any extra money to see the results. You just pop the files on the computer and view.

Ok, I know, enough already. On with the tips:

Tip #1 – READ THE MANUAL! Sorry for shouting, and I know it may seem obvious, but you would be surprised the number of people that ask me questions about their cameras that the manual clearly covers. That’s the first question I ask, “Did you read the manual?” then I usually give them the answer they want anyway,(with a big ole “cheesy” smile on my face) Do yourself a favor and read it. Then, when a friend comes to you with a question about their camera, you can do the same thing – “READ THE MANUAL!”, answer the question, and they will think you are a genius!

Tip #2 – Take the camera with you everywhere! If you don’t, you will be kicking yourself later with the “If I only had my camera” thought that all of us experienced photographers have gone through at one time or the other. After all, you never know when that perfect shot may pop up unexpectedly! You never see an award winning photojournalist without his/her camera because they learned this secret early on.

Tip #3 – Take a lot of pictures! It seems simple enough, doesn’t it? The more pictures you take, the better odds you are going to have of getting that “Perfect Shot.” Digital photography makes this really easy to do. Your not using up expensive film, the memory cards these days are huge(I still carry a spare 2GB card with me all the time though), and batteries last a lot longer than they used to.

Tip #4 – Always use the highest resolution! You will thank yourself for this one later when you have a great picture except for the “half of a face” of some dude that happened to walk into your shot at the exact moment the picture was taken. Happens a lot! You can always crop the picture down a little bit on your computer and still have a great shot big enough to print on a poster if you like.

Tip #5 – Get close to the subject! Optical and digital zooms are great, but they are no substitute for getting close to the subject. Every time you “zoom” in, whether it be optical or digital, you lose a little detail(more so with digital zoom then optical). Plus you run the risk of enhancing any “camera shake” which could cause your picture to blur. Professional photographers know this and use the “zoom” only when needed. Watch TMZ sometime. The photographers are practically on top of the celebs. Sure, they have the equipment to get the picture from a half mile away, but they know that the best picture is going to come from being up close and personal. Also, have you ever seen the pictures where you can see the goose bumps and little hairs on the models body? I guarantee that photographer was in “bad breath” range of that model when the picture was snapped!

Tip #6 – Never shoot into the sun! 1. It can ruin your camera 2. It will play havoc with the automatic focus, exposure, and any other auto setting your camera has 3. It will most likely leave a nasty little sun streak or “flare” on your picture.

Tip #7 – Get the models/subjects out of the sun! This is mainly for outside portrait photography. You don’t want a picture of a beautiful girl with slits for eyes do you? Get them under some shade and shoot from within the shade too! Use a flash for fill lighting to brighten it up. By the way, clouds are your friends! An overcast day will even out the colors captured by your camera, making for great -eyes wide open portraits.

Tip #8 – Use a tripod or mono-pod when using the telephoto(zoom) function whenever possible. This greatly increases your chances of getting a great, non-blurry picture. I prefer a mono-pod myself as it allows for better maneuverability. Just about all cameras have a screw hole on the bottom for tripods/mono-pods. At the very least, steady the camera against something solid. Think of yourself as a “sniper”. If your weapon shakes, you’ll miss the target. Sometimes you only get one chance at the perfect shot. Make sure your camera is steady so you don’t end up with “something that may or may not be Bigfoot”

Tip #9 – Change your perspective! Your an artist, so act like one. Everybody has taken the standard “looking at the subject from where my eyes are while I’m standing up” picture. Be creative. Do a complete 360 degree circle around the subject and take a picture at every degree, or 5 degrees, or 10, whatever. Lay down on the ground and take the shot. Get up high and take the shot.(I love the self shots of the person holding the camera high as though God himself took the picture) I did a whole wedding ceremony standing on the second story balcony at the back of the church without using a flash! They turned out great and the bride was thrilled! Of course I used a tripod!

Tip #10 – Don’t let anyone tell you how to shoot your pictures(unless of course you are being paid by another photographer)! They are yours, your the artist! Be creative, show your personality through them. Also, don’t be too critical of your photography. The picture that you dislike the most may be the best thing since sliced bread to somebody else.

There ya have it! That’s all I have for you right now. Now go out there, take lots of pictures, and have fun! Oh ya, one more thing:

Tip #11 – Invest in rechargeable batteries! Just do it. Save yourself some money.

Ok. Bye for now.

Wait! One more-one more thing. READ THE MANUAL! Then, come back here and check out these links for more learning resources. I appreciate your support.

Portrait Photography, My tips

Article by Mark Anderson

For a photographer, skills in family portraits are essential and are the bread and butter for many photographers. Looking at the history of photography, one of the first popular uses the camera was not for abstract art, or photographing the family pet, but for photographing people and their families. Because of the expense and difficulty of each photo taken, they became masters at getting things right the first time and being able to fit in as many people as possible into the frame. In order to hone in on the small things that make a difference in this classic and often overlooked form of photography, I have come up with my five DO’s and five DONT’s of Family Portraits. I’ve also included a few examples from sessions I have done. You can see some examples on my portraits page.

Family Portraits DO’S

1) Do squash your groups together

Even though they are family they won’t be getting close enough. Maybe it’s an English personal space thing, but it’s always been an issue for me and having everyone in tight truly makes a difference in the tone of the picture. When families are physically close, it emits warmth and visually shows what families should be like…close. Even if you are photographing the Adam’s family, when you get everyone rubbing shoulders they look like a model family and the overall composition is more finished than a typical snapshot. As a starter, try having people stand at slight angles with shoulders overlapping. Also, consider the age of your family. If Grandma is present, make sure you have a chair for her. If Grandma and Grandpa are both there, you’ll will need two chairs.

2) Do coordinate clothing

Before you meet with your family you should guide them in a wardrobe choice. Ultimately it is up to them and their families style to choose what they wear but simply reminding them to possibly overlap in a color scheme, avoid extreme colors, prints and logos on their clothing can make a big difference. This will give you an easier time post production, and you will have both options in color and black and white. As I said, it’s their picture and their choice, but a casual recommendation from the photographer is usually appreciated.

3) Do check the screen for blinking

Shooting and shooting is OK for one or two people, but in a larger group it can be hit and miss and you may miss that one photo where everyone has their eyes open. I used to think “Hey, its digital. I’ll use the rapid fire method and surely I’ll get one right.” After a few sessions of transplanting eyes from one photo to another in Photoshop, I’ve changed my methods. You can get away with a weak smile but if someone looks like they are sleeping in their first family portrait in 10 years, the customer may not be too happy. With experience you learn to quickly scan across everyone’s eyes in an instant.

4) Try and be funny to get some genuine smiles

A few cheesy jokes work surprisingly well to break the tension. A typical photographer joke might be saying “Ok, I need everyone to get in focus.” Or asking everyone to strike their best glamor pose. Other ways to get a smile is to get them doing something they don’t normally do. Children are much easier, have them try jumping, running, human pyramids or whatever comes to mind.

5.) Do try and blur the background

Choose the largest aperture setting you can, while still keeping everyone sharp. An aperture of 2.8 might make the trees and shrubbery look silky smooth, but it might make Uncle Fred at the end of the line look fuzzy. This is especially a problem when everyone is standing on different focal planes. The solution is often to shoot a few clicks smaller than the lenses widest aperture, then use the preview screen and zoom button on your camera to make sure everyone is looking good. Then adjust and continue. If you’re really serious about this, I’ve even heard of photographers setting out cups length-wise on a picnic table to estimate the distances you start to loose focus. Seems extreme to me, just don’t forget about Uncle Fred.

OK so that’s the do’s…………..

Family Portraits DON’TS

1.) Don’t forget to check ALL your basic camera settings before clicking away

ISO (go as low as possible), Image Size (RAW, fine), Exposure Compensation, Metering etc. It would be sad to get to the end of a great session and realize you didn’t change the low quality settings from the last time you used your camera shooting the sofa you planned on selling on Ebay. Of course in-door and out-door settings will differ as will naturally lit an artificially lit.

2.) Don’t let your subjects tilt their heads into each other.

This is fine for your everyday snap shot at a barbecue but not a paid photographer. Subjects tend to think they will fit into the picture better if they tilt and lower their heads. Funny thing is, I’ve even caught myself doing this when I was being photographed. Watch for it and avoid it. There is always the lovey-dovey pose where they intentionally lean heads in, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

3.) Don’t sound insecure

Don’t say things like “This isn’t working.” Rephrase it into a positive, “Great, lets try a few more positions.” The more you tell them the pictures are looking great the better looking the pictures will get. Think high fashion cliche’s like, “Love it,” “Your beautiful,” “What a great one.” If you act like you have never seen such great photos the energy will give you just what you’re looking for and they will show confidence in their smiles.More here: http://www.weddingphotographerslondon.uk.com/

Tips of Digital Photography

Here are the digital photography tips you are looking. When you have newly acquired a digital camera, the last thing that you would want to happen is have it rusted on the corner of your house. You have come to the right page if you want to handle that precious gem you have. If you take pictures just for fun or you do it as a career, then necessarily you need digital photography tips which will make every session successful. They may not ensure world-class pictures but the methods which will be shared in this article will surely allow you to explore your options.

But before sharing with you the different common and unique digital photography tips, you need to at first know why using a camera with digital features is better than the traditional film. With digital photography, you can easily retain and delete the pictures you like and don’t like.

This makes the task faster for unlike film, you need not to have it printed first. With digital camera, you can easily take a shot again once you decide the photo does not level up your standard. Another feature that digital cameras have is the ability to hold thousands of pictures, depending on the capacity of the memory stick. After taking the pictures, add-ins like sepia, cropping and changing their shades can be done quickly. Most of all, through digital photography, pictures can easily be shared, copied or sent by online services.

Here are the digital photography tips which will surely make every photo worth remembering.

-  Taking photos. Normally all will start with the way you will be taking pictures. Settled is the rule that one of the important thing that you have to keep in mind when you are with your camera and taking a shot is to hold it tightly and steadily.

It is not very convenient to bring a tripod everywhere you go, right? Always watch your spare fingers so that they won’t hinder the lens. Another important thing that is included in digital photography tips is when using  smaller cameras, hold your eye up to the optical viewfinder to capture the image, rather than the electronic viewfinder. This will allow you to be steady. Half depress the shutter when you are focusing on a particular object, scene or person. This will help you to focus  and avoid blur. Reviewing the pictures after taking them allows you to delete undesirable ones.

- Composition. Considered as an important stage in the digital photography tips is the composition of your pictures. Many people are said to have a talent on making their pictures captivating but in truth this can be acquired by learning and experience. The rule of thirds, using lines and shapes, keeping balance and putting a subject in a frame are great methods of putting emphasis on your subject.

- Lightning. These are the digital photography tips which pertain to the use of light. In indoor scenes, naturally, light is always not enough. There is nothing brighter than the sun so to say so most photographers utilize the light provided by indoor lights. More light can come in by adjusting the aperture. Adjusting the shutter speed – by using a longer shutter speed, will allow more time for the available light to enter.

Once you have mastered these digital photography tips, then you can certainly enjoy more in using your digital camera.

Review of Evan Sharboneau’s book “Trick Photography and Special Effects”

Article by Jim T May

What is it?

“Trick Photography and Special Effects” is a photography ebook written by Evan Sharboneau. This ebook teaches you how to create visually stunning trick photography images as well as how to use photoshop to add special effects to them.

Who is it for?

If you’ve seen any examples of trick photography and cool special effects photos uploaded by other people on flickr or other websites before, you might be wondering just how is it done. This book covers all the secret techniques and tricks that are used by industry professionals earning a killer living creating these images.

Evan Sharboneau has written this ebook for the beginners and intermediates to digital photography. Whether you take photos as a hobby or to make a living, the tips and tricks revealed in this book will definitely help you become a better photographer. The language used in the ebook is simple to understand and holds your hand to guide you through everything from setting up your camera and equipment, all the way to post-processing the final result.

Also, this ebook makes an excellent gift for anyone who has an interest in photography. This book will definitely inspire them with new photographic ideas and projects.

What is good about it?

There are no other books (online or of the paper variety) that I’ve come across that covers so many tricks, special effects, and ideas packed into one ebook. If you’ve seen any examples of trick photography on the Internet, chances are it is covered here. These are just some of the major tricks you’ll learn how to do properly:

1. Light paintings2. Long exposure tricks3. Motion blur4. Star trails5. Solargraphy6. Forced perspective7. Droste effect8. Custom-shaped bokeh9. Orton effect10. High dynamic range (HDR) photography11. Infrared photography12. Panoramas13. Levitation14. Invisible man15. Fake tilt-shift (miniature) effect16. And at least 30 more…

Each of the these trick photography and special effects are given clear explanations with practical ideas for you to try out. And Evan doesn’t skimp on the large and clear photo examples throughout the ebook. There are hundreds of high resolution and beautiful pictures sprinkled throughout the book so you can see what you can achieve. You can see more examples of what the ebook promises here. You could probably spend weeks and months experimenting with the ideas in there.

The surprising thing is that the information are very accessible. You don’t need to spend money on expensive equipment or attend a photography night class to start producing beautiful images as seen on the ebook cover. You’ll rarely need more than a decent camera, tripod, some cheap props, and a laptop with photoshop software to try all the trick photography techniques and special effects that the ebook teaches you.

One very handy thing in the ebook is that Evan provides external links directly in the ebook so you could click on it to explore more online. The ebook starts with some preliminaries about your camera and equipment and quickly moves on to the first chapter:long exposure effects and light paintings. This chapter alone is worth the price of admission and covers in extreme detail all the different things you could do to produce jaw-dropping photos with light. The next chapter teaches you to do illusions and trick photography that are fun and will baffle those who views it. You could think of this chapter as your bag of magic photographic tricks to use. The final third of the book covers even more mind-bending special effects that you can achieve in software like Adobe Photoshop. The ebook is packed with so many things to try that you will be happily occupied for months.

How does it do it?

The “Trick Photography and Special Effects” ebook by Evan Sharboneau comes as a downloadable PDF file that you can read on your laptop or iPad. The ebook is very well suited for reading on iPad or any tablet computers because of its gorgeous and large photos. The ebook itself is 192 pages long, and comes with a 60-day money back guarantee if you’re not entirely satisfied. To sweeten the deal, if you buy now you’ll also receive a bonus kit consisting of 4 mini-ebooks that complements the main ebook very well.

Verdict

You get a lot of value for your money. Each of the technique taught here is worthy of an entire photography book. Evan removes all the theories and jargon so you can do immediately go out there and start taking cool photos. This ebook is highly recommended and makes an excellent addition to any photographer’s toolbox.

Tokina 80-400 Zoom Lens – The Long Telephoto Lens

Today we’re going to look at the Tokina 80-400 lens. While I’m certainly not a professional photographer, or the best of amateur photographers, I do like to use quality equipment to take my pictures, and I’ve found that Tokina makes among the best lenses for the money that you can find anywhere, both online and in the best photography shops around.

It was 1996 when Tokina first introduced this particular lens. In doing so, they not only introduced a new lens, they created an entirely new class of speciality lenses. It was, at the time, the very smallest zoom lens available that had a bright f/5.6 aperture at 400mm. Fast forward to today, and Tokina has proved itself to be a technology leader yet again because they’ve this same lens and re-worked it to be the superior lens of its size for digital photography work.

It is still the smallest SLR lens that you can get that zooms to 400mm. That, in itself, is an accomplishment, but there’s more. The internal focusing system is among the very best, mechanically. This means that the inner barrel doesn’t have to rotate as it focuses, which makes it much faster than previous models to achieve focus. Optically, the Tokina 80-400 has new multi-coatings covering all the elements; these new coatings are formulated specifically to compensate for the highly reflective environment created by the CCD and CMOS sensors in most (if not all) of today’s digital SLR cameras.

This newly developed coating reduces (not quite entirely, but very close) any chance of internal glare or ghost images. The built-in tripod collar, which is not bulky or in the way at all, delivers superb balance and stability when using a tripod or a monopod. Tokina recommends that you always use a tripod or other firm support when doing close telephoto work (which is common sense, really). Another nifty feature of the Tokina 80-400 (and one that I’ve not noticed on any other high-end lenses) is the zoom lock switch. You can lock the zoom at 80mm to ensure that there is no chance of the lens changing the zoom without you noticing.

The three year warranty is pretty standard among lenses of this category, and with careful use and storage, I’m sure that you’ll get a much longer life from your Tokina 80-400. I’ve been very happy with it, and with Tokina products in general. I hope this review has been helpful to you.

Do you think this is the perfect lens for you? I know it can be hard choosing the perfect lens for your camera. You can spend hours researching and still end up buying the wrong lens. Even worse, you could waste a lot of money and time in the end.

If you think this is not the lens for you, then see my Tokina 50-135 review for an alternative.

This will give you a fresh alternative from this Tokina 80-400 review.
