Back-button AF is a feature which helps you to focus on your subject by pressing a rear button with the right thumb. Press the shutter button down halfway followed by a full press downwards. AF can become more effective when separated from the shutter release. The subject in focus will continue to stay in focus even when a moving subject suddenly enters the picture you are taking.
Among the benefits of back-button AF is that it easy to lock focus. Back-button AF allows you to easily take as many pictures as you desire while having your subject composed off-center. All you have to do is to focus on your subject by pressing onto the rear button, releasing the button once your subject is in focus, and then re-situating your shot so that you can snap your subject off-center.
When focus activation is removed from the shutter button, you can take as many pictures as you like and remove your finger off the shutter button after every shot.
Another pro to removing the Auto Focus from the shutter-button is that crucial timing becomes simpler to manage. For instance, when snapping a picture of a moving subject, a sudden posture of the subject may be ideal for immediate picture-taking. When you have your camera in back-button mode, you can shoot freely. Even if you are to take a picture of a very fast moving subject, having your camera’s focus set to Al Servo AF while keeping your thumb on the back button to maintain the focus in an active mode, you can get yourself ready to shoot at anytime.
Back-button AF reduces the occurrence of risks of focus mistakes on subjects in motion. It is easy to remove your thumb off the rear button for the camera to immediately stop focusing and continue shooting once the interference is out of the way with a full press on the rear button.
Besides that, back-button AF makes it easier for macro and close-up focusing. You can use the AF to obtain a general range. Make a little movement to get things critically sharp. You can now shoot as many pictures as you wish without re-focusing on your subject every time you shoot.
