Kids grow up really quickly! With digital cameras being so ubiquitous, I am assuming that everyone has a camera in one form or another (does not most of our cell phone are now equipped with at least a 2 mega-pixels camera?). Take pictures of your children, you will have photos to remind you how they look and the moments you have treasured together once their children have grown up. Also children who are rarely or never photographed may never know their first few years of their life as they do not have any memory of the experience.
However, kids are extremely difficult to photograph as a subject. They are so active, and they wiggle and do not sit still even when you have asked them – ten times. Do you want to take great pictures of your children? Have you found the right techniques? Here are some easy tips to help you take better photos of your children and freeze their happy memories.
Tip 1: Anticipate their behavior
Being a parent who has been spending time with your children, you will have some idea on their typical behavior. Like what they will do or react in a situation, environment or with someone. So, prepare yourself and anticipate what they will do if you are taking a shot. Anticipate, anticipate, anticipate, so you will never grab your camera too late again.
Tip 2: Use a wide lens
Increase your chance of capturing a shot of your active child within frame by using a wide lens. Wide lens also give the extra depth-of-field to maintain a focus on them
Tip 3: Shoot from a lower angel
Get down to children’s level, kneel or sit down with your camera to capture their perspective for them!
Tip 4: Flash to freeze action
Using available light give you natural and beautiful photos. However when shooting photos indoor, flash is usually necessary. Flash works best typically when the subject is within 4 to 6 arms length. Using a flash enables your camera to use a faster shutter speed which helps taking fast moving children.
Tip 5: Set to continuous shots
Some cameras offer continuous shots. Switch the camera to continuous focusing instead of single shot focus. At this continuous shot mode, you get multiple shots when you continuously depress the button. As long as there is sufficient disk space, the camera continuously tracks your kids in focus as thy move, increasing your chance of a successful shots. If flashlights are turn on, the interval between shots is longer.
