Getting better pictures by using an off-camera flash!
Are you someone who sometimes gets annoyed with your digital SLR Flash?
You are reading this because 1) You have a digital SLR (preferably Olympus!) and 2) Your on-camera flash is annoying you for some reason.
By the way, if you don’t have an Olympus, then you need to get one! I use the Olympus E-510, and I love it.
There have been many situations when I needed some extra lighting. Before I got the off-camera flash, I used the on-camera one. It serves its purpose when I’m indoors, or the lighting outdoors isn’t great. But it doesn’t create artistic pictures.
Before I bought the Olympus Flash FL-50R, I used the on-camera flash of my Olympus e-510. It sucked. I wished I had something stronger. something more flexible. Something MUCH more versatile.
Once I had bought the Olympus Flash FL-50R, I realized what I was missing. Now, I never forget the flash at home.
**On-Camera Flash has its limitations
Let’s be honest – the on-camera flash is great because it is extremely small, and you don’t need to carry anything extra, since it is already attached to your SLR. That may be enough for some people. In reality though, it DEFINITELY affects the quality of your pictures. And you wouldn’t have a DSLR if you didn’t want to take great pictures.
Simply states, the on-camera flash does not provide enough creative freedom.
If you ask any professional photographer, they will tell you that mastering light is crucial to taking good pictures. The on-camera flash will not allow you to properly make use of light.
Your on-camera flash does not move. It will always hit your subjects at the same angle. It is not very strong. It cannot light up entire rooms. It just isn’t enough!
**The Olympus FL-50R and other Olympus Off-camera flashes bring creative freedom
So one year, I saved up enough cash, and bought the Olympus FL-50R. I set a time limit of a week – if I didn’t like it, I could sell it immediately. Once I used it, I never thought about selling it again.
You can tilt and swivel off-camera flashes. This allows you to bounce the light off of ceilings and walls. What this does is that it prevents the pictures from being washed out. This versatility in movement gives you softer and more realistic lighting.
My Olympus FL-50R also helped a lot with autofocus capabilities. I take a lot of pictures in nightclubs, and the autofocus is weak. With the off-camera flash, I have an extra red light that helps make this autofocus much more accurate.
Finally, the Olympus FL-50R is much more powerful than the on-camera Olympus flash. It allows me to light up the entire room if I need to.
In short, get an off-camera flash!
